Polluting With a Purpose

So, every so often, you post something to Facebook that is totally awesome, and nobody notices. It pisses you off, and usually, you get past it. But not me. I hold onto that crap. Take the effect of pollution on hurricanes – apparently, there is one. And the effect means that hurricanes tend to weaken as they approach Louisiana and all our delicious, delicious air pollution. Surely I’m not the only one who finds this silver lining to cancer alley a good thing, right? Seriously, there’s some research paper well above my pay grade that explains how aerosols (fancy word for the crap spewing out of the smokestacks at all our lovely local chemical plants) can weaken strong hurricanes by making them rain out some of their energy before hitting shore. It just kind of blew my mind that our petrochemical industry could be good for more than pretty sunsets …

I Believe

I believe in the decline and fall of Western civilization, and I believe it’s good for a laugh or two. Everyone else can spend their time pointing to the poisons that clog the arteries of the modern world; I point out that poison can be something to giggle about. All because of what I believe – that it’s funny when the center cannot hold. That it’s amusing when social institutions degrade, when civil discourse gets replaced by ubiquitous, instantly-available mobile communication. I think it’s funny when corporate spending on campaigns balloons to the point where government has been purchased wholesale, because it’s a change that can’t be undone.
