Citing budget constraints and declining revenue, East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court Doug Welborn reduced his office’s workforce by a dozen employees this month as the state inspector general conducts an investigation into questionable spending practices by Welborn and his staff. A report by The Advocate revealed Welborn’s office used a government credit card to buy over $93,000 worth of expensive meals, hotel rooms, and sporting goods.
Some workers who were let go also have taken issue with generous pay raises — upwards of 45% — for administrators over the past four years while lower-level employees have missed out on cost-of-living increases.
