ABC, CNN, Other Major Media Outlets Have Email Addresses in the Ashley Madison Hack

Feature

Between them, they have nearly a thousand email addresses in the Ashley Madison database released by hackers last week. Every one of them is a newsgathering agency. Yet, strangely, none has mentioned that a few of its own might be involved.

The Red Shtick’s crack team of data scientists (OK, the single data journalist on staff) decided to correct this oversight and peer into the closets of numerous news agencies. Bear in mind, not all email addresses are created equal. For some of these organizations, local affiliates might share the top-level domain for email. Many of these organizations span the country, if not the globe. They operate on entirely different economies of scale.

Also, there are some obvious plants: emails that were most likely entered by random people ostensibly to screw with certain media personalities and the news organizations themselves (i.e., fuckyou@cnn.com, fuckyou@fox.com, billoreilly@fox.com, billorelly@fox.com, etc.). But we’re fairly certain there are plenty of legitimate emails on there, some of which may very well have been entered by the employees they are assigned to.

To help them get started with just a modicum of due diligence, here are all the Ashley Madison emails we found with news organization addresses.

After all, a former Baton Rouge TV reporter was found on the list of paid accounts that made its way around social media last week. Plus, not only did he use his real name and pay Ashley Madison $848 for … whatever $848 will get you on Ashley Madison, but he used his work email.

Still, it is rather funny that these major media companies are on the list and haven’t covered themselves yet. So, to help them get started with just a modicum of due diligence, here are all the Ashley Madison emails we found with news organization addresses. (Click on an outlet in our Tableau tool, and you can see the email addresses we found with a matching address.)
