For years, area media outlets have been doling out awards to people, businesses, and other entities, praising them as the “best” of Baton Rouge.
Many of these awards are deserved. Some of them arguably are not.
Couple these annual, ubiquitous, “voter-based” pronouncements with the free, disproportionate publicity that some folks seem to garner courtesy of these same media outlets, and you’ve got yourself an apparent Capital City propaganda machine. In fact, some might say Baton Rouge’s No. 1 export is hype.
Some might say Baton Rouge’s No. 1 export is hype.
That’s why we’re introducing “Overrated Rouge” – a chance for you to let us know what people, businesses, and other groups get the most undue attention and aggrandizement in this city.
Each week in June, you’ll get to vote on several items within one of four broad categories, scheduled as follows:
- June 3-9: Dining
- June 10-16: Entertainment and Nightlife
- June 17-23: People
- June 24-30: Retail and Lifestyle
Some may call this an exercise in cynicism. We call it an attempt to bring honesty and balance to the Baton Rouge public relations universe. After all, this is an irreverent satire site, not a glorified cheer squad.
So scroll down and let ‘er rip on the dining category. You have til 10 p.m. CDT Sunday to dish out some bitter honesty.
FYI: If you don’t see an option you’d like to vote for, please let us know in the comments section below (must be a registered site user) and we’ll see about adding it.
