MARCH MADNESS: News vs. Booze – Day 15

News-Booze-vann-nakamoto-canadian-whiskey-bourbonFirst things first: If you got locked out of voting yesterday, it was beyond our control! Our third-party poll service does have a threshold whereby too many votes from the same IP address result in the user being blocked for a “cooling off” period.

So it seems we should have said from the outset that you may vote as many ties as you can, not as many times as you wish. Sorry about that.

Despite the blocks for some repeat voters, nearly 24,000 votes were cast in the news category contest alone! And more than 4,400 were cast in the booze poll! Have you people nothing better to do? (Hopefully not, because you get to do it all over again today!)

And if you didn’t see who won because you were blocked out, Whitney Vann’s countless minions managed to put her over the top with 52% of the vote compared with No.6 seed Kiran Chawla’s 48%. Meanwhile, bourbon defeated scotch with 53.6% of the votes that made it through.

That means today’s semifinals include an all-WBRZ matchup and an all-North American-whiskey pairing. May God have mercy on our web servers’ souls.

NEWS: Chris Nakamoto (12) vs. Whitney Vann (2)

With her defeat of WAFB’s Kiran Chawla yesterday, No. 2 seed Whitney Vann gets to turn right around and do it all over again today against twelfth seed and fellow WBRZ newscaster Chris Nakamoto. The poor woman doesn’t even have time to wash her tournament uniform, much less catch a disco nap, before facing elimination again.

While Nakamoto is clearly the underdog in this “all-Deuce” (i.e., both from Channel 2) news final, at least his voters had a full day to recover. For Whitney’s sake, she better hope her supporters got rehydrated last night and took some salt pills, else they risk cramping up at their keyboards. If that happens, getting blocked from voting may be the least of their worries.

BOOZE: Canadian Whiskey (9) vs. Bourbon (6)

This tournament has been for Canadian whiskey what the Winter Olympics are for the Canadian pastime of curling. While people may refer to a specific brand, you never really hear people talk about “Canadian whiskey.” But then along comes this competition, and people left and right are watching and talking about it for like two weeks!

Well, today, the ninth-seeded upstart is going against mighty sixth-seed bourbon for the crown of top alcohol. And unlike people who may enjoy Canadian whiskey, most folks who drink bourbon proudly identify themselves as bourbon drinkers, like it’s a badge of honor or something. Maybe because it doesn’t have the word “Canadian” in it.

Ready. Set. VOTE! (Polls close nightly at 10 p.m. CDT.)
