MARCH MADNESS: News vs. Booze – Day 10

News-Booze-nakamoto-weatherspoon-vodka-tequilaWe’ll be honest: Yesterday’s “contests” were contests in name only. It was never even close in either category.

WAFB’s morning anchorwoman Lauren Westbrook bolted out the gate and never looked back. The eighth-seeded Westbrook lapped fellow Channel 9 newscaster and No. 16 seed Jim Shannon several times on the way to capturing an astounding 85.5% of the vote. At least Jim can take solace in the fact that he’s on vacation right now and Lauren is not.

In Day 9’s booze matchup, top-seeded beer went down in similar fashion to No. 9 Canadian whiskey, 73% to 27%. In other words, beer got hammered, courtesy of a Canadian. It’s usually the other way around.

Our second Sweet 16 pairings feature Russian tap water, a woman we have no dirt on, the son of a dentist, and a drink that is often associated with inexplicably missing teeth.

NEWS: Chris Nakamoto (12) vs. Sylvia Weatherspoon (4)

For the second day in a row, our news matchup is a contest between newscasters from the same station.

No. 12 seed Chris Nakamoto of WBRZ easily advanced to the round of 16 by easily defeating fifth-seeded veteran newsman Andre Moreau of WAFB with an extremely impressive 81.1% of the vote. Just like the tenacious Nakamoto’s microphone, that was in Andre’s face!

Chris faces off against Channel 2 afternoon and evening anchorwoman Sylvia Weatherspoon, who got to this point by soundly beating WVLA’s Jeanne Burns with 78.1% of the vote. We have a feeling that she’ll see a much higher level of competition from Chris, but ultimately, it’s you who decides their fate!

BOOZE: Vodka (5) vs. Tequila (4)

Fifth-seeded vodka struggled against No. 12 sake in the first round but managed to eke out a 53.4% to 46.6% victory in the end. It’s not the first time forces from Russia and Japan have faced one another in battle.

Vodka’s reward for defeating sake is a second-round matchup against formidable No.4 seed tequila, better known as “To kill ya.” Tequila comfortably put brandy out of its misery by winning 72% of the vote in the opening round.

The No. 5 seed may have prevailed against the spirit from the Land of the Rising Sun, but it better be prepared to face the sordid sauce from south of the border.

Ready. Set. VOTE! (Polls close nightly at 10 p.m. CDT.)
