MARCH MADNESS: News vs. Booze – Day 9

News-Booze-shannon-westbrook-beer-canadian-whiskeyThe first round of competition concluded yesterday with both matchups being closely decided by a huge surge of last-minute votes!

2une In morning show anchorwoman and No. 2 seed Whitney Vann of WBRZ ultimately won the right to move on to face WAFB’s Matt Williams in the Sweet 16, but not before having to vigorously fight off a tenacious Tyana Williams from WAFB by garnering 55.3% of the 1,574 votes cast.

Similarly, second-seeded wine was staring squarely at a first-round defeat until an apparent surge of wine lovers in the final hour outvoted the apparently homeless and unemployed people who had been voting for fifteenth-seeded malt liquor all day. Of the 478 votes cast on the booze side, wine got 54.6%.

So now that we have our Sweet 16, we kick off Round 2 with a pair of matchups featuring an insanely thick head of hair, a cute morning show anchorwoman, cerveza, and a True North spirit.

NEWS: Jim Shannon (16) vs. Lauren Westbrook (8)

Being the lowest-seeded newscaster in our tournament didn’t seem to affect No. 16 seed WAFB reporter Jim Shannon in the opening round, where he handily defeated top-seeded coworker Donna Britt. If only he could handily win the battle of wind vs. hair.

Jim’s reward for beating a popular WAFB anchorwoman? He gets to face another popular WAFB anchorwoman! 9News This Morning and 9News at Noon anchorwoman Lauren Westbrook managed to advance to the Sweet 16 by ultimately defeating WBRZ’s Michael Marsh in a topsy-turvy contest in which 1,362 votes were cast.

So who will advance to the Elite Eight? The eighth-seeded St. Louis native or the veteran Yat newsman? You decide!

BOOZE: Beer (1) vs. Canadian Whiskey (9)

It just wouldn’t be a legitimate tournament if top-seeded beer had lost in the first round. Thankfully, Homer Simpson’s drink of choice defeated liqueur last week with 60.3% of the vote.

Beer’s second-round opponent is No. 9 seed Canadian whiskey, which soundly defeated old-school favorite gin with more than 70% of the vote on Day 2 of the tournament.

Choosing a side in today’s booze contest could prove to be quite the Canuck conundrum for beer-swilling Canadians.

Ready. Set. VOTE! (Polls close nightly at 10 p.m. CDT.)
